14th
Century Blue & White Thailand Porcelain Shipwreck Floral Scene
Plate
This is a beautiful blue and white porcelain plate
with a radiant cobalt blackish blue floral design of a rock topped with
vegetation and surrounded by flowers. Reverse decorated with three
artistic flowers. Plate also has an
exquisitely written base mark that translates "jun yu", a factory
name. Signed plates were produced by the
factory master artists and the unsigned pieces were produced by their
apprentices. The plate has no chips or cracks. It does exhibit negligible
staining and etching expected for a piece exposed to salt water though it has
less aging than if it had been in the ground. A wonderful, artistic and
historic piece. Dimensions: Diameter 15.5 cm Height 2 cm.
These plates were produced in the late 1300’s early
1400s in Thailand
by Chinese potters that settled there during the Mongol invasion and subsequent
Yuan Dynasty. The wares were traded throughout Southeast Asia and Africa. This item was purchased in Hawaii from the fishermen who discovered the
treasure ship in 1985 legitimately in international waters.
