This is an outstanding Zitan wood side table boasting archaic patterns with Ruyi and cloud shapes. This hard to find masterpiece is of CHINESE origin and dates back to the 18th century.

MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE: Fine hand carving.

CONDITION: ORIGINAL as found condition with minor notches and cracks here and there. The table-top is made of two sections and there is a clearly visible gap between them. This outstanding side table is crafted from precious Zitan wood and dates back to China in the 18th century. It boasts an utmost unusual shape with 6 swung feet and a broad figural border surrounding the round top plate. This collar is adorned with the masterful relief carvings of Ruyi and clouds. The six feet are connected to an open ring shape that again stands on six little feet.

Among tropical hardwoods the most prized of all is zitan, an exceptionally rare species. Zitan is so rare that it is virtually unknown in the West, and until recently was thought to be practically extinct. Its tight grain and hardness make it so dense that it sinks in water. Zitan trees grow very slowly, and zitan wood has always been in short supply. Therefore, relatively few pieces of zitan furniture exist, mostly in museums or private collections.
