This 19th century lidded Agate vase shows an appealing Hu shape and has a smoky light pink color. It boasts few dark red natural inclusions which partly have been cleverly adapted for the imagery.
Stretching around the central body of the vessel we see dragons in fight for the Lingzhi mushroom, a traditional Chinese longevity symbol. The dragon motif is repeated at the shoulder handles where rings are also delicately carved. Finally a lion sits on top of the removable lid completing the parade of mythical beings.
The depictions have been carved in high relief and the polishing is of superior quality. The subtle pink color and the translucent quality of the material add even further to the elegance of this 19th century master carving.
George I, King of the Hellenes (1845 - 1913) was King of Greece from 1863 to 1913. Originally a Danish prince, when only 17 years old he was elected King by the Greek National Assembly, which had deposed the former King Otto. His nomination was both suggested and supported by the Great Powers (the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Second French Empire and the Russian Empire).
As the first monarch of the new Greek dynasty, his 50-year reign (the longest in modern Greek history) was characterized by territorial gains as Greece established its place in pre-World War I Europe. Two weeks short of the fiftieth anniversary of his accession, and during the First Balkan War, he was assassinated.
