Antique steam engine indicator, in original fitted wooden carrying case. The indicator is marked in different spots "Improved 'Robertson-Thompson' Man'f'd By James L. Robertson & Sons N.Y. City, U.S.A.", "Improved 'Victor' J. L. Robertson & Sons, N.Y.", "Pat'd Aug. 31, 97.", and "Pat. Appl'd For". It is also marked with the numbers 6863 and 4717, and again with the company name. There are 11 wooden spools numbered by twos from 10 to 32 (number 30 missing). There are also five metal cylinders, numbered "34 36", "38 40", "42 44", "46 48", and "50 52". This indicator comes with a pocket oiler, a container of leads, a screwdriver, string, and various attachments. I'm not sure how it all fits together, so please see pictures below. The thin arm that holds the lead is bent slightly, but I find no other damage. This finely crafted instrument appears to be in very good condition. There is a compartment in the case that holds a logbook and two books on steam engines. One of the hinges on the compartment is not attached on one side. The case measures about 10 1/2" by 9 1/2". It still has the original key. The case shows some wear and has two age splits in the bottom, but it is still sturdy.
