Sebastian Münster was born in 1488 at Ingelheim near Mainz and died in 1552 at Basel. He was a cartographer, cosmographer, and a Hebrew scholar. His work, the Cosmographia from 1544 was the earliest German description of the world.
Description
The Cosmographia of Sebastian Munster was the first scientific and at the same time generally comprehensible description of knowledge of the world in German language, wherein were summarized the bases of history and geography, astronomy, natural sciences and regional studies after the standard of knowledge.
This is an original double leaf with a nice coloured woodcut map out of this famous work (German edition) from Sebastian Munster. This map shows the world with North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia as well as a large southern continent with the name Terra Australis Nondum Cognita.

Münster war ein Kosmograph, Humanist und Hebraist. Außer seinem Hauptwerk, der Cosmographia, hat Sebastian Münster mehr als siebzig zum Teil sehr umfangreiche Werke auf dem Gebiet der Hebraistik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Geographie, aber auch der Theologie und der Bibelwissenschaft verfasst.
Beschreibung
Die Cosmographia war die erste wissenschaftliche und zugleich allgemeinverständliche Beschreibung des Wissens der Welt in deutscher Sprache, worin die Grundlagen aus Geschichte und Geographie, Astronomie und Naturwissenschaften, Landes- und Volkskunde nach dem damaligen Wissensstand zusammengefasst worden sind.
