In the post First War years Dufy's art mellowed from the intensity of his Fauve period into a marvelous and lyrical expression of the freedom and joy of life itself created in lithographs depicting images of sea, sailing and his enjoyment of the open-air landscape expressed in delicate, almost musical, black and white linework. The Illuminations Nouvelles series were last prints made before Dufy died in 1953. They were printed by Mme Daragnes, the wife of artist and master printer Jean-Gabriel Daragnes and a Paris friend of Dufy for a retrospective of his life's work titled Illuminations Nouvelles. The prints were issued in an unsigned edition of 250.
