I am proud to offer this exceptional, antique 18th century violin to the highest bidder.

The violin bears the label of Daniel Acheleus Stadlmann, one of the greatest Austrian violin makers. I do not know if this violin is by Stadlman, nor am I certain that it is Austrian. I am certain that the violin dates to the 18th century, and that it is a fine, handmade violin. There is also an inventory number, 1014 visible through the treble f hole.

This
violin is without doubt very old, and probably dates to the early to middle 18th century. I am
not at all certain of its origin but I would suggest that it is
Germanic, possibly Tyrolean, maybe Vienna. It bears many characteristics of ancient violins of southern Germany and Austria but I am not able to determine its exact origin. The label looks very old, and is dated from the same period as this violin was made.
The violin has
been heavily played over the centuries, and often repaired. There are
corner repairs, edge repairs, a button graft, rib extensions, inlaid sound post patch, doubling
of the top edges, etc. etc. but no soundpost cracks to the back.
The repairs are of fine quality and very old reflecting an old-world artisan
level of workmanship that is very expensive today. The violin has
been thoroughly checked and properly set-up, including new ebony pegs,
new bridge, new soundpost, and new strings. The strings are new,
Thomastik Dominants. The set-up is excellent with comfortable and proper string heights and
spacing. This violin is ready for immediate play out of the box. (You
will need to tune it for certain). There are no repairs or other
adjustments needed. You will need your own chinrest and shoulder rest.
The
varnish is original and in wonderful condition. The scroll and pegbox
is fully bushed and grafted onto a later neck. The scroll is elegant, expertly carved and artistically executed. The purfling is
beautifully inlaid with excellent mitered corners. This is a beautifully
made and very well restored old violin. It is getting harder and
harder to find these old survivors, as most have either been poorly
repaired or otherwise destroyed over the years.
The back measures 358mm. This is a full-sized violin.
But back to the sound of this fiddle. This is one of the
best sounding violins I have ever had-if you like a dark, rich and
syrupy, fat tone; which I do. If you are also looking for a brilliant,
piercing and penetrating sound, then you will find it here, but only on
the higher registers of the A and E strings unless you can dig in.
Otherwise, the tone is nearly viola-like, rounded, deep, thick and
resonant. This is a very strong and powerful sound, big and loud, but
very smooth, dark and warm. But, when really pressed, and played
aggressively, this violin develops that ringing brilliance and the
superb penetrating ability that makes the violin the king of
instruments. It is a very capable and flexible tool for the expert
player or performer looking for that really special sound with the
ability to be heard. This violin will not disappoint.

a full-sized violin. The back measures 358 mm. This is
