CERAMIC LIDDED POT by Harrison McIntosh

A wheel-thrown straight-sided round lidded pot crafted out of red-brown earthenware.  The pot’s lid sits recessed on a flange circling the inside of the mouth.  A stubby three-blade knob rises from the lid on a short neck.  The pot’s exterior is combed all around with deep horizontal precision grooves and is covered in a dark-cream matte glaze.  The exterior is patterned with alternating equal sections of “squares” and “circles”.  The squares were formed by applying dark-brown matte glaze only within the channels of the grooves.  The circles were formed by dry-sponging a grey-brown matte glaze only on the ridges of the grooves.   Dark-brown matte glaze was brushed on top of the lid and around the perimeter of the pot’s low foot.  The lid’s knob remains a dark-cream accented with light-brown.   Light-brown also accents the rim.  A light-blue matte glaze was applied over the pot’s interior and a light-brown wash was brushed over the blue producing color striations and heavy speckling.  The piece is coated with a clear matte glaze overall.  The lid’s underside, the mouth flange and the low foot remain a burnished bisque finish.  Scattered firing inclusions are apparent over the pot’s surface.

The lidded pot measures approximately 6-1/2” high X 8-3/4” at its widest part.  The pot is 5-1/4” high without its lid.  The artist’s stamp is incised on the bottom.  The pot is in mint condition.

The piece was created in 1977 by Harrison McIntosh a prominent artist whose works are in the permanent collections of various museums around the world including the Musee National De La Ceramique, France;  Musee Des Arts Decoratifs the Louvre, France;  Mingei Museum, Japan;  Kiushu Museum, Japan;  Belgian Royal Collection (ms), Belgium;  Arizona State Museum, Arizona; Everson Museum of Art, New York;  Museum of Arts and Design, New York;  Smithsonian Institution Renwick Gallery, D.C.;  Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California;  Haggin Museum, California;  Long Beach Museum of Art, California;  Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan;  Johnson Collection, Wisconsin;  Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Mass.;  Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Utah;  Boise Arts Museum, Idaho;  Newark Museum, New Jersey and others.
