Along with Antonio Borsato, Tiziano Galli and Bruno Merli , Giuseppe Cappè is one of the acknowledged 20th century master sculptors of Italian artistic porcelain. Born in 1921 in Milan, he began sculpting at age 25 and opened his own factory, Porcellane Cappè-Creazioni di Giuseppe, in 1958
Reflecting his acute powers of observation, Cappè’s creations capture the human character and customs. Always fresh and original, his works can often display a sense of humor, sometimes verging on the satirical, while others reveal a respect for his subject. Full of character, regardless of his approach, His attention to even the smallest detail is remarkable, with all the intricate work created or applied by hand, from wisps of hair to sinews to shoe laces. Finally, each sculpture is hand-painted, further assuring that each piece is unique.
Frequently imitated, even plagiarized, original and authentic pieces by Cappè are unmistakable. Many are now in private collections and museums worldwide.
Capodimonte porcelain was originally produced from 1759 to 1780 at the Royal Factory in Naples, Italy. The name became synonymous with the finest quality Neapolitan porcelain and ceramics from that period onwards.
Today, many different porcelain companies use a variation of the distinctive Crown over Neapolitan N mark of the original factory along with their own mark or name. Use of the original mark, as well as the name Capodimonte, nowadays indicates a piece in the style of Capo-di-Monte, unfortunately sometimes without regard to quality or even being made of porcelain. Such is not the case with this item. |
