Mopspool
| Antique Mother of Pearl Spool / Reel English * Circa 1850 The top of this pretty Victorian spool holder is carved of mother of pearl with a flower petal design and a scalloped edge. It has a metal shank and a bone bottom. It pulls apart to allow a ball of thread to be slipped on.
The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks and the mother of pearl is very luminous. It is 1 1/4" high by 1 1/8" in diameter and was once part of an English workbox set. Some reels of this style are shown on p. 139 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries and the style of workbox they would be from is shown on p. 105.
