For your consideration we have here a mid 19c Chinese gilt lacquer Manadarin fan with its original shaped presentation box. This gorgeous Chinese export fan was produced in Canton around c1840 for export to the West. This is a very large fan being over 21" wide when fully opened showing a marvelous gold gilt lacquer display on the guard and inner sticks. The quality of the lacquer work is of the highest order depicting a central vignette containing figures amoungst outdoor scenes surrounded by Budhists symbols along with butterflies, flowers, leaves as well as carefully applied pindots all from tu-tone gold gilting. The wonderful hand painted leaf of rice or pith paper still maintains its vibrant colors along with hand applied silk garments and painted faces made from a natural off white tusk material. Both sides are equally finished but with different scenes and colors. The fan still retains its original swing arm and tu-tone silk tassel as well as its shaped gilted lacquer presentation box. Condition of the fan is excellent with only very minor rubbing to the lacquer and the leaf is complete with all garments and faces with average expected seam and edge wear. Length 11" x Width 21" (when fully opened). A superbly done Chinese export fan in fine original condition with a nice bonus of having its original lacquer box.
