Rare Wireless Tuner Deforest Coil Tuning
This is a very early Radio Tuner of the type used in the pre-broadcasting Wireless period. I would estimate this set to have been made sometime between 1915 to 1920.
The engraved control panel, construction and bus-bar wiring indicates factory origin but does not include a manufacturers name. The coils are all Deforest equipment and the individual moveable coil mounts are of the earliest Deforest design. The two outer coil mounts have 4" tuning arms with bakelite knobs.
The receiver is housed in a hinged wood cabinet that measures 6" w x 8" h x 11.5 d. The cabinet is also factory made and similiar in construction and finish to the early Deforest Interpanel and other wireless period Receivers.
This set is a Tuner only and designed to be used with a Crystal and/or Valve Detector unit. Each input from the three honeycomb coils are wired to seperate binding posts labeled, Primary, secondary and tickler. In addition, there are two sets of binding posts for attaching "Aerial" and "Ground" connections.
Opening the hinged lid reveals a long inner compartment, in which the three coils were found stored. All of the wiring on the rear panel is of the solid bus-bar type. There is also a variable condenser which bears the Benjamin Radio company logo. Two additional wires run across the bottom of the set to a pair of binding postd on the bottom rear of the tuner.I have provided pictures of the front as well as the rear of the panel, showing the tuning arrangement and wiring.
This early tuner is in good condition with the cabinet showing minor scratches and finish wear consistent with its age. It is of a type and vintage that is worthy of the term museum quality. It displays well and will enhance your collection of early radio artifacts.
