GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Estate Find.
Extraordinary early example of this classic chair and ottoman!
Eames 670 & 671 Lounge Chair and Ottoman for Herman Miller comes with original chair shipping tag with 12-31-59 (New Year's Eve!) date. Bottom has Herman Miller Patent tag and circular imprint from old metallic badge.
Handsome and rare Rosewood and Tan Hide (or Mocha) leather cushions combination in very nice original condition.
Chair frame is SOLID with no repairs. All original hardware and shockmounts. Beautiful Rosewood grain headrest, backrest and seat show minor wear - typical light surface scratches and paint marks (see photo links). but nothing significant. Light edge wear in places and only one small interior veneer chip on head rest.
Body uses early original double clip and snap design to affix cusions.
Base is heavy cast aluminum with all five "Domes of Silence" feet pads.
No structural cracks, breaks or repairs, again very solid.
Aluminum backing bars show some typical light scuffs. Black aluminum paint has some missing areas/scratches typical of age but still very nice.
Ottoman body has one chip to veneer (see photo link) about 1/4" inch, therwise OUTSTANDING condition with gorgeous Rosewood grain pattern. Original fixed base with all four "Domes of Silence" pads in excellent condition.
CUSHIONS:
Tan/Mocha leather is very soft and supple. Headrest and back rest sections are excellent and only need a light cleaning. All buttons are present and backing is excellent.
Seat cusion is also soft but has a few small surface cracks that do not penetrate. Both buttons are missing, however the anchor stitches on the bottom are very solid which leads me to suspect the may be present and simply pulled into the cushion but I cannot be sure.
The heavy backing paper around one hook anchor was torn but repaired with heavy cloth tape at one point and does not effect function at all.
Lastly, the seat cushion needs a seam repair where the leather has pulled away from the bottom connecting cloth. It is a clean tear and likely simple job for an experienced upholster. A previous attempt at repair is evident but not significant or damaging.
Both armrests are complete with no cracks. The right shows wear to the piping from use (see photo link) and both have yellowed glue from original installation on the underside - not visible unless you tilt the chair.
The Ottoman cushion has outstanding loft, texture and softness. Very clean and glossy! It too will need a seam repair however as the original thread has detached around one curve - about 10 inches long. Only visible when you sit on it (see photo link).
As you can see from the photos, the ottoman leather is more orange in color than the chair. I do not know why. It is possible they were purchased seperately however the Ottoman is of the same early vintage given it's use of the double hook and snap design.
All cushion foam appears excellent but I would advise cleaning/replacing the down inserts as they do retain a musty smell and the chair's comfort (which is, as you would expect - OUTSTANDING!) would benefit from relofting given it's age.
These are from a non-smoking environment.
I've attached as many photos/photo links as possible to provide an accurate description. Please contact me with any questions.
In conclusion, this is a terrific example of this iconic design that will only appreciate in value. Finding a pair from this early period is VERY HARD INDEED. Don't let them get away!
Please see my other auction for the VERY RARE 1950 Controlight pictured with the Eames Lounge.
