Early Pattern Glass Snuff or Patch Box
Amazing Hand Painted Portrait Lid
This is a wonderful example of an early snuff or patch box that was found with a collection of other antique boxes we are listing this week.
It is difficult to accurately date this unmarked piece, but it is definitely from the era when voluptuous women were in vogue, perhaps the early to mid-1800s. There is magnificent facial detail expressed on the portrait of this young woman. With her big brown eyes and bowed red lips, she is coyly smiling in a relaxed and somewhat suggestive pose.
The portrait is bright, vivid and realistic looking with no apparent fading or paint loss. The hinged lid is in smooth working condition and is the simple lift-up style with no snap closure. The inside of the box reveals the thin original mirror, which is unbroken but shows age spotting.
The box is comprised of brass fittings around a pressed fan and diamond point pattern glass box that measures 2” tall by 2¾” in diameter. There are absolutely no chips, cracks or repairs in the glass box. There are some light surface scratches on the base of the glass, as would be expected from an object of this age.
