Very rare, original, 1911 Lithograph on Tin, Advertising Sign for Dr. LeGear’s Patent Veterinary Medicines manufactured by the Dr. L. D. LeGear Medicine Co. of St. Louis, Missouri. This fantastic and very rare Chromolithographed Tin Sign measures approx. 17 3/4" x 14 1/2" and is signed by the lithographer - The American Art Works Company of Coshocton, Ohio. The Sign is titled “Dr. LeGear" and features the famous “Giant Horse“ by the same name. Text beneath the massive and very beautiful, Percheron Gelding reads “Dr. LeGear / 21 Hands High / The Giant Horse / Weight 2995 lbs / Owned by Dr. L. D. LeGear Medicine Co., St. Louis / Manufacturers of Dr. L. D. LeGear’s Stock and Poultry Remedies”. The edges of the Sign are chamfered giving it a recessed “frame”. Along the lower edge is s printed plaque that reads “The above portrait is an exact likeness of ‘Dr. LeGear’ the Largest Horse in the World. He is a beautiful, dapple seal brown Percheron Gelding, 21 hands high (84 inches at the withers), takes a 33 inch collar, is perfectly proportioned, absolutely sound, is nine years old (May 1st, 1911), 16 feet from tip to tip, wears a No. 10 shoe, and weighs 2995 lbs. He was foaled and raised on a farm in the United States and is valued at $25,000. He is pronounced by Veterinary Surgeons and Horse Experts everywhere to be the Greatest Horse that ever lived. The sign is copyright 1911 by the Dr. L. D. LeGear Medicine Co. and signed by the lithographer on the paper board backing - The American Art Works Company of Coshocton, Ohio. It is self framed and has a porous cardboard backing.
This very rare and very beautiful Tin Lithographed Dr. LeGear’s Veterinary Patent Medicine Advertising Sign is in good condition - the colors are generally bright and the sign displays nicely. The lithography that depicts the man, the horse, the grass and farm on which they stand and the printed text in in excellent condition with little or no wear. The solid, gray background color that covers the remaining surface appears to have developed a surface crazing that tends to make it look somewhat mottled (see the scans below). There are also a few darker lines in this gray area - one line above and to the left of the man’s head and along the “crease” lines where the Sign is chamfered and along the very outer edge. We have seen examples of this Sign with similar surface crazing and believe that it is caused by a flaw in the lithographer’s ink. We have also see quite a few of these Signs which have had the background colored black (many people believe that this was the original color) with excellent visual results. Overall the Sign is still VERY well preserved and displays beautifully!! We have made no attempt to clean, repair or restore the surface and offer it here “as found”. A very rare and very attractive, 1911 Tin Lithograph Advertising Sign for LeGear’s Veterinary Patent Medicines and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!!
Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 5% sales tax. Insurance is required on all items selling for $100 or more and optional on items selling for under $100 (but highly recommended) and not available on International Shipping.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.

We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. ,
