This is a truly outstanding, original and very tall Diana lamp from the 1930’s, in a breathtaking combination of chrome and deep brown black-mottled bakelite - an exceptionally stunning and rare example.
The lamp has a totally unique and absolutely superb feature consisting of a heavy chromed foot showing beneath the stepped and ribbed bakelite base, and its breathtaking beauty is complemented by its superb octagonal stepped shade in cased glass in off-white, i.e. the very faintest shade of cream.
The lamp has been refitted with a high quality chrome gallery and chrome lampholder (bayonet type) incorporating a push-bar “on/off” switch and it has been rewired to Australian safety standards with a luxury old-style silver braided cord, in perfect harmony with the chrome and bakelite, but still retains the original brown bakelite plug which has been tested and approved for safety.
While I usually dedicate a great many more words to my descriptions, in this case I will allow the photos of this rare, exceptionally stunning Diana lamp to speak for themselves…
Dimensions
Height, with shade: 56 cm / 22 ”
Height, without shade: 42 cm / 16 ½ ”
Base diameter: 14 cm / 5 ½ ”
Weight, with shade, excluding cord & plug: 2.265 kg / 5 lb
Condition
The lamp is in near mint condition, the chrome is mirror-like and the bakelite is glossy, unscratched and free from chips or cracks (2 minuscule fleabites to the back rim of the stepped bakelite disc sitting beneath the figure).
The figure has a few of the usual pinpricks of minor pitting and a very thin (2-mm) band of chrome missing from her left ankle where the brass show through - this completely “disappears” within the high reflectiveness of the mirror-like chrome and is only perceptible on extremely close inspection.
