A very rare early Northwest Coast Salish Thompson River Indian domed top fully imbricated storage basket circa 1870-1880. The basket was originally offered at Sotheby's NY sale Nov 30,1995 lot 233. The basket is a great example of the Native adaptation of the foreign world around them, the vision of the domed top steamer trunk (which would have first been seen on the Northwest Coast in the mid 1800's) must have inspired a very talented master weaver to attempt to copy the design in their own materials. The execution of a domed lid on the basket made to fit must have been a tough challenge to say the least. The basket is massive measuring 27" in length by 12" wide and stands 13 1/2" tall at the top of the domed lid. It is in very good condition with some edge wear noted to the corners of the lid and imbrication wear as expected with great age and use. Please add $40 for careful shipping and insurance (USA). Good Luck and Happy bidding. We'll be happy to combine shipping if feasible. Please check out other current offerings including a great Tlingit and Kwakiutl totem. Please email us for more specifics and links to our website. Please note we are usually only able to ship items out one day a week mostly Thursdays and Fridays. .
