Very Rare, original 1895 American Baseball Guide volume titled "Spalding's Base Ball Guide and Official League Book for 1895. A Complete Hand Book Of The National Game Of Base Ball, Containing The Full Official League Records For 1894, Together With The New Code Of Playing Rules As Revised By The Committee Of Rules. Attached To Which Are Explanatory Notes, Giving A Correct Interpretation Of The New Rules...". Edited by Henry Chadwick. New York, 1894. Published by American Sports Publishing Co. This rare and fascinating volume measures approx. 4 1/4” x 6 1/2” and contains 165 pages plus 21 fantastic photographic plates and 27 profusely illustrated pages of advertisements for Sports Equipment including baseball uniforms, bats, mitts, hats, catcher's masks, etc. This important, original Guide contains complete coverage of the 1894 National League Season, and averages for both the National League and the various minor leagues and colleges. The Spalding (1877-1939), Reach (1883-1939), and Spalding-Reach combined (1940-41) Baseball Guides are one of the cornerstones of any serious baseball library, as they are the only continuous and complete contemporary accounts of their respective seasons. Other guides came and went for a short period, but these two stayed the course. The editor Henry Chadwick was the "Father of Baseball" and its most influential reporter & organizer. Chadwick was principal in organizing the professional game & keeping it distinct from the amateur. A.G. Spalding [1850-1915] was the premier pitcher of the 1870s and an organizational genius during Baseball’s formative years. He led the league in pitching victories in each of his six full seasons in Organized Baseball (1871-1876). His 47 victories led the 1876 Chicago White Stockings to the first-ever National League championship. With the success of the sporting goods business he founded in 1876, Spalding left the playing field for an executive role with the White Stockings; as club president from 1882 to 1891, he directed the club to three pennants.
The volume is bound in its pictorial paper wrappers which are both present though edge worn. The front cover is also detached. The interior pages are in very good condition - complete, tight and generally clean with light, uniform age toning and light edge wear to the frontis portrait of A. G. Spalding and to the title page only. This wonderful volume contains a wealth of information for the serious student of 19th century Baseball. A very rare and fascinating contemporary look at the 1894 American Baseball Season and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.

We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. ,
