This is a full set of
Sterling Silver Gorham tableware in the (discontinued) 1938 Greenbrier
pattern. No monograms. Designed by James Russell Price, the pattern
is classic elegance. The handles
gradually fan out toward the bottom and have small delicate flowers set at
three places along each side. This
pattern will complement any style of china very nicely. The 40 piece set has 8 4-piece place settings
plus 8 various serving utensils:

The pieces were probably acquired at different times
because they have slightly different markings.
The various piece markings are:

Dinner Knives: 6 have “Stainless” on the blade and “Sterling
Handle” on the handle; 2 have “Gorham Sterling Handle Stainless Blade” on the
blade

Teaspoons: all have “Gorham Sterling”; 3 also have “Pat.
1938”

Dinner Forks: all have “Gorham Sterling Pat. 1938”; 1 also
has an “R”
·
Salad Forks: all have “Gorham
Sterling”; 4 also have “Pat. 1938”
·
Serving Utensils: all have “Gorham Sterling”; the sugar spoon,
ladle, and 1 serving spoon also have “Pat. 1938”
Extremely Good Condition ~
Family Estate ~ Always Hand Washed
My grandmother was the
original owner of this silver. She
acquired the original pieces most likely in the early 1940’s. My mother inherited it from my grandmother in
1979. The pieces have always been only hand
washed. The pieces have normal usage
marks as would be expected with their age; although some are almost mark
free. The knife handles and the dinner
fork tines seem to have the most usage marks.
There are no significant dents. 2 of the knives make a small noise as if the
blade is loose, but the blades seem to be securely attached without any
‘wiggle’. One of the tablespoon serving
spoons as a very light “JM” scratched on the back handle behind the
manufacturer’s marking. SEE PHOTOS of
