Wow! This is a extremely rare and stunning OLD Nippon ferner. This was produced in the 1870's-80's. At that time Japan was beginning to seriously make inroads to the European market. Having been a completely sealed country fot hundreds of years previously, the Japenese now were trying to make a statement as to their ability to complete in newly open Western Economies. The Jpanese have been manufacturing porcelain for hundreds of years longer tha Europe, and quickly adapted to the Western designs and styles. Initially Nippon iteems, such as this were based on the style of Western porcelain. It wasn't until the 1890's, with an enormously expanded exceptance in the market place that Nippon took on many of the characteristics known to us today.
This beautiful ferner is a perfrct example of the Japanese efforts to produce very highly quality porcelain based on European market desires. The round body is supported by three carved porcelain feet. These are intricately shaped, and gold gilted. The body is decorated in dark cobalt blue, almost black with brightly colored carnations, all hand painted. This is a large piece meassuring 9" in diameter and over 3 1/2" high. It's quite heavy really, but when I hold it to the light the thick porcelain base it completely transparent. The bottom is unglazed, raw porcelain. There is no manufacturers mark on this ferner. But it is definitely styled in European look very similiar to well know pieces such as Limoges, or Royal Vienna . This shape and mold were prevelent during the second half of the 19th century. Due to the lack of manufactures mark, this was manufactuured before the 1891 Taft Trade Act requiring all goods brought into the US to be labeled with country of origin, most likely in the 1870's or 1880's. this is exceptionally high quality antique porcelain. The decoration is absolutely stunning, and will certainly enhance any good porcelain collection. There are no chips, cracks, flakes, hairlines, etc. This is simply a excellent quality, fine antique porcelain. And it is just waiting for a new home!
