This is for a really stunning original art nouveau Erhardt & Sohne tobacco jar from around 1895. It has a fabulous inlaid brass secession design, there are little geometric borders to the edge of the lid and these are replicated at the bottom of the body, the main theme that runs around the jar is lovely silhouettes of children in different gymnastic poses. The centre of the lid is a little more organic with a loose whiplash pattern. The base is marked Webster, 43 Dover St, W. which would we presume have been the retailer. There is a possibility it was intended as a tea caddy, its very difficult to tell, it is lined inside with what looks like pewter, but it doesn't look as though it has ever been used for either. It is a fabulous looking jar and it displays beautifully, The condition is absolutely excellent with no damage to it anywhere, there are just a couple of very light dings to the base by the address. The base measures 110mm (4.25") in diameter and it stands 120mm (4.5") high.
