Most of the items currently listed were done by well documented artists and are being offered with no reserve.
This painting is 100% guaranteed, as described.
This painting comes from T
One side of this painting shows a brightly lit landscape, with some houses in the background. The other side depicts an architectural setting, possibly an area in one of California's missions. Both paintings are very confidently painted. This is despite having different subject matters and color palettes. If you have studied art history, you are probably well aware that most artists who were able to competently paint both of these diverse subject matters are important. I strongly encourage you to research this one.
Item Details and Condition:
This oil on board measures 14.5" by 18.5", with its' frame. The actual painting measures 12" by 16". The painting is monogrammed "JK", on the lower left (landscape side).
The painting is in good, overall condition. It is dirty and may benefit from a cleaning. Aditionally, there is a 1/4" by 1/4" corner off the board that has broken off. Most of this damage is hidden by the frame, but a small portion is still visible. The painting is very stable.
The 1.5" carved wood frame has numerous sufrace scratches, but is presentable.
When examining the painting under the ultraviolet light, I did not find any evidence of inpainting. The monogram is original to the painting and did not flouresce under the ultraviolet light.
We can speculate about authorship. However, it would be difficult to argue about the quailty of this painting.
Good luck on becoming the winning bidder of this old double-sided California plein air oil painting.

On Nov-29-08 at 11:03:52 PST, seller added the following information:Hello. I was at an estate sale this morning and was approached by an individual who saw this painting on eBay. He stated that he saw a similar painting sale at John Moran's October 21, 2008 auction. He added that he believes this may be the work of the Californian/Hungarian artist - Joseph Kleitsch (1882-1931). I did find the painting of the California Mission he described. That painting has some similarities, but is a different composition and is unsigned . If you care to view it, please go to: http://www.johnmoran.com/fine_art/full/catalog/med/012.html Upon further resaearch, I went to AskArt and found some other mission paintings. Another mission painting was offered at Bonhams and Butterfields on 8-08-05 and is close to the same size as this painting. It can be seen at: http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=lotdetailsNoFlash&iSaleItemNo=2551493&iSaleNo=13221&iSaleSectionNo=1 After reviewing Kleitsch's other paintings, I have learned that he did many different subject matters - landscapes, portraits, missions... even cats! His styles changed and quality varied. In my opinion, some of his paintings are good. Others are terrible. Having such a broad range of subject matters, styles, varying quality levels and since it is only monogrammed, I cannot guarantee it to be his work. I do not wish to debate it. However, I can say that this painting was definitely done in his lifetime (prior to 1931). The brushwork is bold and confident. The monogram is original to the painting, after being analyzed under the ultraviolet light.
