Important and very desirable, 1867 Edition of “ Johnson’s Family Atlas” fully titled “Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas, With Physical Geography, and With Descriptions Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, Including the Latest Federal Census, a Geographical Index, and a Chronological History of the Civil War in America.”. New York, 1867. Published by Johnson & Ward. This wonderful Atlas of hand Colored Maps measures approx. 14 3/4” x 18 3/4” and contains 102 pages of Maps and 123 pages of text. The Maps include 38 color double page maps, 22 color single page maps, plus other charts and plates. The majority of the Maps are of American interest. The double page Texas map has simply stunning. The atlas is bound in its’ original 1/2 leather and cloth covers which are intact and tight with wear to the lower right hand quadrant of the front cover (see the scan below). The interior is complete with all maps, plates, text pages, end papers and blank leaves are present. The Maps are generally in very good condition except for the double page Map of the United States which is partially split at the fold and has short edge tears and edge wear, the double page Map of the State of New York which is split at the fold (more than 1/2 way up from the bottom) and has short edge tears and edge wear, the double page Map of Iowa which is split at the fold approx. 1/2 way up from the bottom and the double page spread which has single page maps of Minnesota on one page and Oregon and Washington on the other which is completely split at the fold and has some edge wear (both Maps are complete and intact and will matt and frame nicely). The hand coloring on all of the Maps is bright and vibrant with no fading. There is a thin, dark water stain on the outer edge of the final leaves of the Atlas affecting the very edge of the margins only of some of the World Maps (none of the US interest Maps are affected). Otherwise all Maps are tightly bound and very attractive. Most all of the Maps would display wonderfully if matted and framed (only the US, Iowa and New York Maps would need some repair). Overall the outline coloring is very bright and vibrant and the individual Maps are very attractive. A wonderful, complete 1867 Johnson’s Family Atlas with highly desirable hand colored maps showing the United States at the close of the Civil War and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
