~ NO RESERVE AUCTION ~
This wonderful no reserve auction brings you a beautiful blue cobalt decorated 3 gallon elephant-ear handled crock. Made by and clearly stamped "F. B. NORTON & CO WORCESTER, MASS. 3" who produced pottery in the mid to late 1800s beginning c1858. Note the crude and uneven rim in the side pictures. This piece is a real beauty!
The makers stamp is quite sharp & clear and highlighted with blue cobalt. This early piece of decorated stoneware by Frank B. Norton & Company comes to you in the highly desired and extremely collectible 3 gallon size, which can be easily displayed just about anywhere you please.
This is another great example of early Norton stoneware, with their trademark high quality light tannish/gray stoneware under a thick application of salt glaze that was generously applied, leaving a very shiny appearance with that nicely pebbled texture which is highly desired by collectors. The top rim is extra-thick and flared, made for heavy-duty use.
The deep dark blue cobalt decoration is of superior quality and was generously applied. Most of the decoration is so thick that you can feel the raised texture with your fingers! It features one of Norton's trademark designs, a large double bullseye floral pattern with four large petals or leaves growing up from the middle and four dotted tendrils. The entire decoration was done in a very thick and deep dark blue cobalt that really stands out and contrasts well with the tannish/gray stoneware background. This piece was expertly crafted by a master potter! This antique crock by F. B. Norton is in excellent condition. Please see condition statement below:
Condition: Excellent. The base is perfect. Both applied elephant ear handles are perfect. There is NO frying to the super-thick blue cobalt decoration. No chips but for one tiny nip at the inside rear of the thick flared rim. There are no other issues but for a manufacturing flaw at the top left of the rim where a potstone left a mark during the firing process and was then covered with salt glaze, proving it to be done at time of manufacture. This adds great crudity & character to the piece. If you're one of those who desires the best in antique decorated stoneware, then this is one for you!
Dimensions: 9 1/2" high with an 10 1/2" diameter base. Top rim diameter is 11".
Weight: 11lbs 9ozs
