You're bidding on a gorgeous piece of antique stoneware dating to c1865 judging by the excellent grade of stoneware used along with the extraordinary 10" long light blue cobalt floral decoration. It has a primitive yet well-executed applied handle and a small stamped "2" highlighted in blue cobalt on the front shoulder of the jug. The piece is otherwise unmarked. It appears that this piece is one of the first examples made during the transistion to a period when stoneware became the popular way to store goods of all types, jugs being mainly used for liquids for obvious reasons.
This nice collectible piece of stoneware comes to you in the highly desired smaller two gallon size. It features a large 10" long light blue cobalt triple-leaf with bloom folk art design. The blue cobalt is exceptional with extra-large leaves and a small bloom or butterfly at the bottom. The artist obviously took great pride in his craft!
The piece has a beautiful thick & shiny coat of salt glaze giving it a pronounced pebbly texture, lending unparalleled beauty and eye appeal.
Condition: Good. the handle is perfect. There is NO frying to the abundant and large blue cobalt floral decoration. There are no repairs. There are two decent-sized chips at either side of the spout. There is also a long hairline that runs from the base at the rear left side up to the shoulder with a small tight extension over towards the base of the handle. it cannot be seen when displayed and the jug remains rock-solid.
Dimensions: 12 1/2" high with a 8 1/2" diameter base. Spout diameter is 2". Crudely applied handle is 5" long.
