I was lucky enough to acquire a fresh collection of military artifacts from the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. I will be listing much of that grouping this week so please check my other listings for additional parts of that collection.
This is a Rev War period iron axe head that was dug in the Annapolis, MD area. There are similar belt axes pictured on page 208 of Weapons of the American Revolution and Accoutrements by Warren Moore. I have scanned that page and included it here for your convenience.
The axe is signed with three letters by the owner or maker...JBJ. There is a stress crack down the head but this is still a great display piece. The axe measures 8" across, 3-1/4" across the edge and 1-1/2" across the hole.
I am using some of the descriptions that came with the collection and my knowledge of Revolutionary War period artifacts is limited so look closely at the scans and send me any questions you may have.
