Very rare and beautiful, ca1905, Sleepy Eye Flour Chromolithographed Pillow Top Premium depicting the meeting between Native American Indian / Sisseton Sioux Chief "Old Sleepy Eye" and President James Monroe at Washington in 1824. This outstanding, printed fabric Pillow Top measures approx. 22" x 22". It was one of the many Sales Stimulating Premiums distributed by the Sleepy Eye (Flour) Milling Company of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. The Milling Company put many different kinds of "Premium" items directly inside their bags and barrels of flour. Later the items were sold pr given away at the Mill itself. Premiums included blue decorated stoneware pottery of all types (pitchers, steins, vases, butter crocks, etc), rulers, cookbooks, souvenir spoons, table linens, breadboard scrapers and 2 different color lithographed Pillow Tops. The Pillow Top offered here is titled below the central image "Chief Old Sleepy Eye Before the Great Father (President Madison) at Washington, 1824.". This central image pictures "Old Sleepy Eye" (or Ishtahumba) standing before President Monroe who is seated at a desk and surrounded by men in military uniform. The Chief raises his hands in greeting to the President. Beside him stands a white man in frontier dress (likely an interpreter) and behind the chief are numerous Indians in traditional dress - most seated on the floor. It appears that the meeting is taking place in the Capitol Building or perhaps the White House and in the background a number of white men in formal dress can be seen seated in rows (likely members of Congress). Surrounding this central image is a printed “frame” containing various Native American scenes or artifacts. At the upper left hand corner is the trademark of the Sleepy Eye Milling Co - a profile of the Chief within a circle and with text that reads “Old Sleepy Eye”. Along the top edge of the Pillow Top is a view of Indians peering over a cliff and along the bottom edge is a Native American Camp scene. Also around the edges are a pipe, a tobacco pouch, a quiver of arrows, spears, a shield, etc. The entire fabric surface is covered with this dark, rich chromolithograph image that is stunningly beautiful. This fantastic Old Sleepy Eye Pillow Top is 100%, unconditionally guaranteed to be an original, ca1900 premium from the Sleepy Eye (Flour) Milling Company of Minnesota. It is in excellent, original condition - clean and crisp and beautiful. The colors are as bright and vibrant as the day it was manufactured and the fabric even retains most all of its original sizing!!! There are a few, tiny scattered spots of foxing and the back side of the fabric shows an area of light water staining at the top edge but this is barely visible on the front and then only as a very light line at the right side of the top edge. There is also a tiny (1/4"), tight tear at the upper left hand corner between the image of Chief Sleepy Eye and The corner of the fabric. We did not see this when the Pillow Top was in a frame but only saw it once the fabric was frmoved from the frame and examined closely. Overall this is an exceptionally well preserved example of this very rare and highly sought after Sleepy Eye Pillow Top and will frame and display beautifully!!! Again we must stress that this is NOT a later reproduction, reissue or counterfeit example but an original, ca1905 Sleepy Eye Flour Chromolithograph Illustrated Pillow Top Premium and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.
We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. ,
