Fantastic, very rare and historically important, 1890, Sterling Silver, Salem Witch Souvenir Orange Spoon by Daniel Low of Salem, Mass. This important spoon measures approx. 5 3/4" long. The handle features a witch on a broom and the word Salem along with 3 “Witch’s Pins” which extend down toward the bowl of the Spoon . The bowl of the spoon is shaped like an invalid feeder and we have been told that this is called an “orange” or “citrus” spoon. The back of the handle has a raised, silver pattern type design and is engraved with text that reads “DGH / Xmass 1890”. The spoon is marked Sterling, signed “D. Low” and also marked “Pat. Apd. For”. This is the "infamous Salem Witch " spoon which is credited with launching the entire souvenir spoon movement in the United States. The "Witch Spoon" was created by Daniel Low, a jeweler in Salem, Massachusetts, after he returned home from a German vacation where he had noticed "odd and unusual" souvenir spoons being sold, according to the prevailing documentation. It has been believed that he sold his first “Witch Spoons” on or around October 1, 1890 as a Halloween item but it is known that Low was issued a “design patent” for the Spoon by the US Patent Office on January 13, 1891. What makes the spoon offered here special is the fact that it can be definitively dated to December 1890 - 3 to 4 weeks before the design patent was issued. This is corroborated by both the engraving on the back of the handle and the stamped mark - “Pat Apd. For”.
This very rare and very early Salem Witch Sterling Souvenir Spoon is in excellent condition - crisp and beautiful with no damage of any kind. This spoon came to us with a small collection of figural handle spoons from an estate here on Cape Cod - we have not cleaned the spoons but will be offering each one on eBay over the next few weeks in "as found" condition with warm and beautiful age patina (the spoon will certainly shine up beautifully if the buyer wishes to do so). A very beautiful, pre-patent example of the Salem Witch Sterling Silver Souvenir Spoon and a fantastic addition to any collection!!! Without a doubt an important piece of Souvenir Spoon History!! Be sure to check out this seller's other auctions for 3 other Figural Handle Sterling Silver Souvenir Spoons being offered this week on eBay!!!
Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 5% sales tax. Insurance is required on all items selling for $100 or more and optional on items selling for under $100 (but highly recommended) and not available on International Shipping.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.

We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. ,

WE WISH TO STATE THAT WE WILL ALWAYS ACCEPT PAYMENT BY CHECK OR MONEY ORDER!!!

Under this new, highly restrictive policy, it will be necessary for our buyers to request that we accept their check or money order payment but rest assured that even though we will be prohibited from stating this in our listings, WE WILL ALWAYS ACCEPT CHECKS OR MONEY ORDERS AS PAYMENT FOR ITEMS PURCHASED AT OUR WEEKLY eBay AUCTIONS AS A SERVICE TO THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH ELECTRONIC PAYMENT SERVICES!!!
