Small Ivan Shishkin Russian Landscape Oil Painting
Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832-1898)

Currently, I am having my 2nd annual "Fabulous Fall" sale.

This is a special 2 session auction that features many important paintings by many important artists.

This painting is 100% guaranteed, as described.

This oil painting's provenance includes "Bill Hood & Sons Art and Antique Auctions" (Florida).

Please note that the digital image of the painting with the frame is very blurry. I had a difficult time adjusting to the frame's shadows and ended up taking "long distance" photograph (to avoid the shadows) of the painting.

To many people, the name that has become synonymous with the Russian 19th century landscape painting is Ivan Ivanovivh Shishkin. His Russian forest paintings have become sought after by many of the world's top collectors and museums. Being a superior example of his work, this is an important painting.

Shishkin's depictions of nature are meticulously rendered. When closely examining this painting, no details were excluded. The lighting is perfectly captured. The growth of the trees and underbrush are well detailed. Even limbs, that have fallen to the forest's floor, were recorded. Most likely, this was a peaceful day after a big storm. Much like a scientist, Shishkin must have spent a signifigant amount of time anylyzing this landscape and carefully depicting its' fine intricacies- on canvas.

If you are unfamilar with Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin, I would like to share his biography from "Horizons Canadian and Russian Landscape 1860-1940" with you:

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin

"Born in Yelabuga in 1832. Died in St. Petersburg in 1898. Shishkin spent his childhood amidst the century-old forests and majestic rivers of the Ural and Volga regions and his love for these places remained with him throughout his life. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1852–1856) and at the Academy of Arts (1856–1860). Having been awarded the Academy’s Great Gold Medal, the artist received the right to travel abroad, and in 1864–1865 continued his education at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts. Even his mature creative work is similar to the Düsseldorf School of landscape painting. Shishkin’s outlook on nature is that of a researcher, a scientist of the epoch of positivism. Striving toward authentic re-creation of nature, Shishkin thoroughly researched the object of portrayal, working from life for long periods of time. His nature studies resulted in outlines and small sketches that the master used in his work on monumental canvases. He became the creator of Russian epic landscape painting, and established the genre of forest landscape in Russian art. In 1870, Shishkin became a founding member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, and in 1873, a professor of the Academy of Arts. Shishkin contributed to the artistic formation of F.A. Vasiliev, and G.I. Gurkin was a student of his. Shishkin’s etchings, which he worked on his entire life, became an important part of his artistic legacy. In 1871, the artist founded the Society of Russian Etchers.”

Item Details and Condition:
This oil on canvas (laid on board) measures 13" by 10.25", with its' frame. The actual painting measures 10.5" by 7.5".  Shishkin signed the painting on the lower left. There appears to be some other writing next to the signature and is dated "1873" or possibly "1893"...I am not certain.

The painting is in good, overall condition. In the upper left corner, there are are some very minute specks of paint missing. Total paint loss accounts for less than 1% of the painting's total surface area. The painting is very stable.

I had the frame custom made for this painting. For some reason, the framing shops I visited did not have the best selection of choices...to state it politely. Regardless, the painting comes with the newly made frame.

When examining the painting under the ultraviolet light, I found no evidence of inpainting. The signature and other writing are original to the painting and did not flouresce under the ultraviolet light.

Places such as "The State Russian Museum ", "The National Gallery of Armenia" and "The Hofstra Museum" are only a few, amongst many places that own Shishkin's work. Being one of Shishkin's best paintings, this should prove to be a valuable acquisition for any serious art collection.

Good luck on becoming the winning bidder of this important 19th century oil painting by Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin.
