An interesting old boxed microscope. Screws onto top of mahogany box and focuses with a screw & rack principle. Engraved on the ratchet Cox, Devonport. I am not sure if he is a maker or retailer.
There are 4 lenses, mirror and a couple of oddments. Has a lift out tray with a space beneath, preumably for storing slides.
Retaining most of it's original bright laquer finish, though this has worn in places. It looks to be reasonably original but as a non scientist I am not sure how efficient it as as a working microscope so I am selling it as a collector's/decorative item. The ratchet is in good working order but when screwed on to the lid and tightened it is at an angle (see photos). This could probably be adjusted. Furthermore, the largest of the lens is held in place by what appears to be cotton thread, presumably because the screw thread is worn. The small devision to one of the interior is cracked and has a small piece missing. No key to the box.
I believe this dates circa 1820.
Approx 11.1/2in high when set up. Size of box 6.1/2in x 4.1/2in x 2in deep.
