| Outstanding Japanese Samurai Sword with Cutting Test - Original Samurai-era Sword offered at No Reserve This
is an outstanding example of a 100% ORIGINAL Japanese Samurai Sword, signed,
with gold inlaid cutting test.
The blade
is in GOOD ORIGINAL POLISH. Has some very slight dulling
to the finish, but condition is very impressive. Hard to find an unabused
sword in original polish these days. It is 27 5/16" long overall
with a blade length of 21 1/8". Has a straight (Suguha)
temper line, clearly visible to the tip with a turnback along the back
of the blade (Mune). The forging is extremely tight, to the point where
there is no activity visible within the tempered area. There are Ware
(openings to the lamination) along the back of the blade (Mune),
and one light Ware inside the tempered area (see circled area in photo,
below). Has an almost microscopic chip along the cutting edge about
4 3/4" from the tip.
The Tang
has a GOLD INLAID CUTTING TEST. About 50% of the inlay
is still present. The rest has fallen out due to the extreme age of
the blade. The cutting test reads:
"Kanbun
Roku Nen Jyu Ni Gatsu San Hi" [6th Year of Kanbun, 12 Month,
3rd Day = December 3rd, 1666]
"Futatsu-do
Kiri O-toshi" [2 Bodies Cut Through in ONe Stroke)]
"Yamano
Kaemon Nagahisa" [Yamano Family of Sword Testers - Nagahisa
(with Kao (Seal))]
The Tang also
has a Tachi Mei (maker's signature) of 11-12 characters - very
indistinct - don't want mislead anyone, so will only say it looks like
"Hizen no Kuni Ju ..."
The
Scabbard (Saya) is a plain Shirasaya with
damage at the throat and a wooden Habaki.
