An extraordinary needle case, made about 1840 in the Netherlands. The case has a very elegant shape; the lid and the lower part are identical. The hand engraved decoration features scrolls, leaves and lattice work. The top is engraved with "A D J" . There are two hallmarks: the small sword for silver items, made in the Netherlands 1814-1905 and the mark of the silversmith. This might be the mark of Pieter Loopuijt, who worked in Hoorn, Noord-Holland, 1820-1853, but I am not sure. The mark of Loopuijt is a combination of an "L" and a "P" followed by "77". The mark on this needle case ends with "77"; the first part of the hallmark is faint; see picture number 11.
The case is 3 3/4" long, 9/16" wide and about 5/16" high; the weight is 10.0 gram. The condition is excellent; there is only one shallow dent in the case, near the Dutch silver hallmark. Otherwise there is no single damage. The silver is very glossy: you can see the reflections of my orange/red t-shirt.
This splendid needle case can become an eye-catching part of your collection.
