Ancient Chinese Jade Shaman Sacrifical Crown/Pendant
—Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)
This pure Jade Huang is a Museum quality example of early Chinese art and culture from the Neolithic Period. Chinese experts date this amazing ritual jade to the workmanship, carving style, and genre of the the Liangzhu Culture (3500 BC--2100 BC) in ancient China. A recent appraisal by one Chinese antiquites expert has determined that this jade crown was made during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) as a revival piece to honor the Liangzhu Culture. Simliar "revival" pieces can be found in the Freer/Sackler Museum in Washington, DC. I call your attention to a cong (Freer # 1916.382) that was collected in 1916 by Mr. Freer that is now in the Freer Museum that is made of the exact same style and white jade as this Headpiece: http://www.asia.si.edu/collections/singleObject.cfm?ObjectNumber=F1916.382
This ritual object was meant to be worn as a pendant or amulet in ancient China. It measures approximately 2.9" long x 1.9" wide x .25" thick, and weighs approximately 31 grams or 1.1 ozs.
This headpiece was made in China of pure, Nephrite Jade that was originally a dark green in color. Normally, jade objects from the 5,000 year-old Liangzhu Culture turn a deep, rich, chestnut brown color from the elements and minerals they absorb from the surrounding soil. But what makes this particular headpiece especially rare is that it has turned cream-colored white after being subjected to the high heat of a fire. Experts believe the shamen would burn jade ritual objects during sacrificial prayers so the smoke would spiral up into the Heavens and carry their prayers to their ancestors and to the Heavenly Gods. I believe this Qing Dynasty jade copy was subjected to high temperatures in order to artifically "age" the jade and turn it white.
If you look carefully at the photos, you will see the tiny stress cracks in the jade from the heat of the fire. These extreme temperatures caused the once green nephrite jade to turn a cream color. Few of these sacrificial jade objects survived the heat, as most cracked and split into dozens or hundreds of small pieces. Most of the world’s fine museums have one or two examples of these sacrificial jade objects, but they are extremely rare!
On the front of the headpiece is the famous Tao-Tie, a spirit monster that was thought to drive away evil spirits and protect the wearer from harm. Two holes were drilled by hand at the top of the crown so that it could be worn as a pendant by the shaman or high priest. This hole is consistent with those drilled in identified museum pieces. Each hole has been drilled by hand from both sides of the amulet. The eyes are those of a mythical Spirit Monster called a Tao-tie that would scare away evil spirits. The eyes were cut using ancient hand drills that used powdered jade as the abrasive and are period correct and match perfectly the examples on display at the Smithsonian's Freer & Sackler Gallery website. Only the front side has the Tao-tie on it, the reverse side is smooth.
It is a wonderful piece and would look great displayed next to your other fine ancient Chinese jade and bronze pieces!
Please examine the photos taken at 4x macro carefully as they are part of the description.
