Plan
de la Rade de Moka
58 x 42 cm copperplate
engraving, 68 x 51 cm sheet size, Dépôt-général de la Marine,
Paris, 1843
We
are pleased to offer this scarce original chart of the harbour and
coast near Al-Mukha in Yemen - the famous coffee trading port better
known in the west as Mocha. The chart was compiled under the
direction of Capitaine (later Amiral) Aimable-Constant Jehenne
(1799-1863), commander of the Prévoyante in early 1842.
Jehenne was a prolific and precise chartmaker and this chart
is typical of the elegant presentation of his charts featuring two
panoramic views of the historic city, dozens of depth soundings with
preferred anchorages and a finely detailed coastal survey.

To
get a sense of chart detail, consider that the distance from the "Fort
du Nord" to the "Grande Mosque" within the city walls as seen in the
enlarged photo below measures just 6 cm actual size:

Title
cartouche - note elegant calligraphy:
The
chart presents two skyline panoramas including the famous Al-Shadeli
mosque and minaret - named after the man Richard Burton described as
the founder of coffee use in Yemen, writing in "First Footsteps in East
Africa" "we have learned by the testimony of many persons that the use
of coffee in Yemen, its origin, and first introduction into that
country are due to the learned All Shadeli ibn Omar":

Condition
- Please note carefully: Chart is in overall very good
condition as can be ascertained from photos, some minor soiling to
margins but image area quite clean. Two minor repaired tears
to lower margin well outside neatline, no text on verso.
In
all a well preserved example
of a scarce and decorative chart that will make an elegant
presentation
if matted and framed. Inquiries
