Antique Tang Dynasty Horse Pottery Sculpture T'ang

This is an antique horse sculpture from a private collection. It was purchased from a direct importer of fine Asian antiques. This horse is from the Tang Dynasty, 618-907 A.D. and it has been tested and and was found to have last been fired between 900-1500 years ago, and has Oxford Authentication. The certificate is included.

The horse was one of the most popular animals to be found - in sculptural form - within burial chambers of the wealthy during the T'ang dynasty.

Within T'ang society, the horse played an important role. It was not chiefly a beast of burden, but rather a partner in military campaigns. Revered for their vigor and strength, horses symbolized the status and personality of their owners. Sculptures of the horse emphasize its elegance and strength, as if emphasizing qualities of the prosperous and powerful Tang dynasty itself.

This item is in amazing structural shape and is believed to be made of terracotta. There is also some traces of paint where the horse was decorated. The horse's tail is broken off, and it has been glued previously. It may be able to be attached with adhesive or fixed by a professional restorer. The surface of the piece is in pretty good shape for how old this item is. There is some paint worn off his saddle and painted on bridle and halter. Aside from a few surface scratches, there are also two small holes, one under the head, and one from the stomach, where samples of the pottery were taken to be analyzed. Please see pictures and don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have about this item.

This is a great item for collectors of T'ang Dynasty artifacts, Chinese history or horses!
