 This is a superb

SHIPS'

PELORUS COMPASS

In my estimation it dates from around the mid 20th Century, circa 1950, but please make up your own mind about this.

The pelorus measures approx 16 inches (410 mm) tall, with a 6 3/4 inch ( 470mm) diameter card and is made from bronze & stainless steel.

A pelorus (essentially a pair of sights either side of a compass card) can be used to take relative bearings and so can be used in checking for compass deviation as well as transits.

( For a more detailed description please see below )

The instrument is counterweighted and sits upon a gimble for shipboard use.

It bears the makers' name for

H.IVERSEN'S KOMPASFABRIK A/S

TRONDHEIM

and is marked

NEPTUN P-6

NR 75138

It is in excellent condition and comes complete with its stout wooden carrying case.

This is a superb example of its type and it would make a great addition to any collection.

Please see the photos for condition and type

There is no reserve

In appearance and use, a pelorus resembles a compass or compass repeater, with sighting vanes or a sighting telescope attached, but it has no directive properties. That is, it remains at any relative direction to which it is set. It is generally used by setting 000° at the lubber's line. Relative bearings are then observed. They can be converted to bearings true, magnetic, grid, etc., by adding the appropriate heading. The direct use of relative bearings is sometimes of value. A pelorus is useful, for instance, in determining the moment at which an aid to navigation is broad on the beam. It is also useful in measuring pairs of relative bearings which can be used to determine distance off and distance abeam of a navigational aid.

Please DO NOT ask me to disclose the reserve whilst the auction is in progress. To be fair to everyone I just don't do it.
Please DO NOT ask me to stop the sale and sell to you before the end of the auction, again, to be fair to everyone, I don't do that either.
