My grandfather passed away recently and left this with no real story or history to accompany it. He never spoke of it, and it was only seen a few times in the house as my mother and aunts were growing up. He was a merchant marine during WWII, and the assumption is that he probably acquired it from a returning soldier on the ship he was serving on as they came back to the States. Since the family has no real knowledge of this artifact, I am listing it on their behalf.
I do have a friend who happens to be an extremely dedicated katana collector, and through several years of research has become quite an authority on the topic. He has an extensive collection of swords, some of which hold historical significance with the Japanese government, and it is with advice from said source that I am making any suggestions or claims. I am NOT an expert and I am trying to present this with as much factual information as possible. The truest facts are going to be the pictures. If you are a serious buyer let me know if you need more specific pictures and I will email them to you.
Okay, my friend took a close look at this knife, or sword, depending upon how you look at it, and he determined with much confidence that the age must be between 200-300 years old, based upon the quality of the steel, the condition and authentic presentation of the ho wood shirasaya and some particular patterns in the metal that I was not skilled enough to recognize on my own.
The blade was at some point cut down from a full size katana, and fashioned into what is now approximately a 15" long blade. The tang does not have any markings that we could make out. He believes that the point line shows indication of a higher than normal quality blade, in very good condition. The overal condition was described as "a great candidate for restoration". My friends consideration was that it's true authenticity and original glory could only be realized if it were sent back to Japan for a restoration by one of only a few people posessing the skills to properly bring it back. If the buyer of this blade wishes to pursue this avenue, I am sure that I can provide contact info to you at a later date.
I have set the starting bid at a level that will remove any regrets from family members, but at the same time should allow a serious buyer the leverage to fund a restoration and still make a handsome profit if selling is desired post-restoration.
