| Up for auction is a stunning antique quilt whihc has been made in an Irish Chain pattern and also features Floral motifs. his thin (no batting) lightweight quilt measures 84" x 62" and it is in very good antique condition - I see one blackish dirty mark on one edge (I have not washed this quilt and suspenct that it will shift...looks like soot to me) and here is mild red color bleed throughout - I have tried to photograph it but it is very faint and does not show up in my photos. There are no holes, no rips and no major stains - it is quite sturdy. The ground is a white muslin which has been teamed with a deep russet red with a very small scale tan floral. What really sets this quilt head and shoulders above the rest is the outstanding hand quilting whiich has been done in concentric outline of the floral motifs, in the ditch throughout, in a concentric X motif of the alternating blocks and in a diamond grid on ther postage stamp patchwork blocks - all at a whopping 12 stitches per inch!!! The sttiching is unbelievably fine and even, it shows up beatifully on the back and the applique work around the flra motifs is almost invisible to the naked eye. This quilt is clearly the work of a master quilter at the top of her game - it is truely superb. Based on the fabrics I date this quilt at the turn of the century - about 1890 - 1910 - just an absolutely treasure.
