Mappa Geographica Regni Poloniae

53 x 48 cm copperplate engraving, 63 x 53 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Nürnberg, 1773

We are pleased to offer this scarce original map (Niewodniczanski #K44) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, covering a territory including what is now Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine from the firm of Homann Erben (Heirs), the leading German map publisher of the 18th century and founded by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724).  The map was first published in 1750 and was compiled on a "stereographic projection" by the noted astronomer Tobias Mayer (1723-1762). This later state, printed in 1773, was revised to reflect the redrawn boundaries of the 1772 First Partition of Poland.  The finely engraved map extends from Riga in the north to the Black Sea and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.

Title cartouche presented in baroque "frame":

Turning to the map itself, we find Poland in traditional regional divisions, thus Warsaw is in the centre of Masovia (Mazowsze):

Prussian cities given in German form, thus Danzig for Gdansk etc.:

To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Poznan (Posnan) to Kalisz (Kalisch) as seen below measures just 4 cm actual size:

Lithuania - note pictorial representation of marshes north of Vilnius:

Kiev and environs:

Southwestern Poland:

Condition - Please note carefully:   Map is in overall good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct and unusually wide platemark, hand colour bold and vivid, centrefold as issued.  Map exhibits some minor soiling in margins, somewhat pronounced in upper corners but well outside platemark.  Overall a well preserved example of a handsome map that will that will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.  Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
