You are bidding on the RARE ANTIQUE ULYSSE NARDIN DOUBLE BOXED / GIMBALLED SHIP'S DETENT CHRONOMETER pictured below.
NOTE: YOU CAN CLICK ON THUMBNAILS BELOW FOR LARGER IMAGES THAT WILL OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW. This marine chronometer is in beautiful, virtually unused condition. It is running and keeping time. It dates to 1944-45 and was originally sold to the U.S. Navy. It comes with it's two boxes and original papers as pictured. Take a close look at the pictures - there are few signs of wear. The only issues: cracked glass in top of inner box - should be fairly easy to replace - and no serial numbers on the boxes - the serial no. plates appear to have been removed.
Both inner and outer boxes are signed as are the dial and the movement. The movement has a fusee and has a 56 hour wind indicator (some might say 48 hour but it looks to go beyond that). There is what appears to be a non-magnetic helical hairspring and of course it is freesprung. There is a diamond endstone. The jewel settings are screw down, the escapement is a spring detent. I'm not sure of the type of wood used in the boxes. The outer box is redder in color. The boxes have no damage or cracks. The dial is about 102 or 103mm in diameter...close to 4".
