A brass and mahogany 5-draw telescope signed in script on the first draw: BERGE LONDON LATE RAMSDEN.
This hand-cleaned and refurbished instrument is firm to use with all draws extending smoothly, without wobble.
A good, clear image is provided through the 2 inch (5cm) original Object Glass, which is free from chips or scratches. Estimated power around X35-40.
The eyepiece is in good condition with original, sliding dust cap.
Length extended 107.5 cms. - closed 26 cm.
Please note the following: a) The OG cap is missing; b) The eyepiece condensing lens has slight damp markings and a couple of very minor chips - these are so slight they show only as minor shadowing to the extreme outer edge - hardly noticeable (in fact, I don't think many sellers would trouble to draw attention to them); c) there is minor surface denting to the 4th and 5th drawtubes.
Despite the above, this is a handsome, decorative and useable telescope.
Matthew Berge was foreman to the great man, Jesse Ramsden. When Ramsden died in 1800, Berge took over his workshop, finished many of Ramsden's instruments and continued in business until 1820.
