This elegant and extremely pretty MEDICINE CLOCK or NIGHT CLOCK is in good working order. It stands approximately 24 cms tall to the top of its white glass, globe-shaped dial/shade, which has a diameter of approximately 10 cms at its widest point.
The hours are marked on the shade by black-painted Roman numerals and there are also markings for the half and quarter hours. The shade sits on a circular, revolving brass mount, beneath which the clock mechanism is housed in brass, with a fixed steel pointer. Underneath this is the winder and a tiny ball-shaped pendulum with central knurled decoration. A pierced brass chimney holder fits into the top of the shade.
The upper part of the decorative stand is constructed of brass. The lower part is constructed of another metal - most probably spelter. The circular base (approximately 10 cm diameter) has a vine or ivy-leaf decoration. At the centre of the stand is a black ball shape, which appears to be made of ebony.
Please Note: I'm not certain as to whether illumination would have been provided by a candle or a spirit burner. If the latter, then the burner is missing but this seems unlikely as the reservoir would have been extremely small. However this is for you to decide on before bidding.
Please also note that the little glass chimney has suffered damage but these can be obtained/made at relatively little cost.
A winding key is included which fits and works perfectly but is not the original.
E-bayers who know my user name will appreciate that I usually sell early scientific instruments and I am not an expert on clocks. However, my personal opinion is that this clock is of Continental origin, possibly German(?) and from the latter half of the Nineteenth Century. In any event, there can be no doubt that it is an exquisite and desirable timepiece.
