This is a leather bound, hand written antique Koran from the late 19th century. The ink appears to be from natural pigments whereas the paper is post-industrial revolution; the cut, size, thickness and texture are regular. The worn, brown, grease stained upper right edges however attest to the endless exercise of page turning by its previous owners. Without a doubt it has been rebound several times since it was first written, yet it remains intact with over 200 pages. The pages at both extremities witness its age in their darkened state
whereas the inner pages maintain a better color contrast darkened only along
the edges. However in contrast to many of its contemporaries, it is not desecrated with ballpoint scribbles and graffiti from previous owners. At the end there are two pages in which previous owners have made their notes and comments using a fountain pen. It was bought in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia however most likely journeyed
from the Arabian Peninsula across the Straights of Aden by dhow to
arrive there many years later.
Overall it stands 5.5 cm high and its cover measures 20 x 24 cm.
This Koran will be packaged for international shipment by registered Swiss airmail for $45 anywhere in the world. US bidders, please note that due to the item's location and Ebay's listing matrix, I am unable to enter the correct shipping price. I will request that the shipment fees ($45) be paid at the end of the auction even though it reads "free shipment" in the US. My apologies, but please ask before bidding should you have any questions.
I am neither proficient in Arabic nor a scholar of Islam, however I
will do my best to respond to any questions or requests for further
pictures.
There are few Korans of this quality and provenance, so good luck bidding.
