| Early American Antique Weather Vane Race Horse Smuggler
Here is an exceptionally nice early American antique running horse weather vane, of large size, that measures approx. 42 inches long. This is an authentic original early American antique weather vane, mid to late 19th century, and not a copy or reproduction of any kind. (I found only the vane, no directionals.) It is made of copper, and it is in very good as-found condition, all original, with no replacements of any kind. It retains several layers of old paint & gilt, and has no bullet holes or other holes or cracks, aside from a small 2 inch long seam on the left front knee, which started to open just a bit long ago; but it is very, very minor (please see close up). He is pretty dirty, just as I found him, and he has a number of small dents & dings, as can be seen clearly in the pictures, but nothing that I think would require any serious repair or restoration. It is all typical and appropriate wear & tear for his age and type---he still looks great!~~~ The paint is crackled, and the occasional chip reveals even older layers of patina underneath. Some might wonder what may be hidden there; perhaps a more original weathered verdigris surface could be revealed by a competent restorationist, but personally I wouldn't touch it; he already has a beautiful honest old patina and looks great just the way he is. ~~~The size and stance of this old racing horse weather vane are very impressive. He is depicted vaulting along at full speed, with his head thrust forward, his ears thrust backward, and his especially long tail flying straight out behind him, as if to emphasize his speed!~~~I've heard that this particular style of vane represents the champion 19th century race horse " Smuggler ", although I have also heard this type of vane referred to as " Dexter ", another famous thoroughbred. Whatever the case may be, I'll let the new owner decide his name!~~~This is the classic style of running horse weather vane that was used on barns and stables across America in the 19th century. For very good reason they have come to be regarded as quintessential Americana, and even Folk Art. ~~~ If you would like to have an authentic early American antique weather vane of iconic design, then this one is indeed a champion--- large and impressive, in totally unrestored condition, he looks just great where ever you display him!~~~ Please have a look at some of the other early American things that I found and have up for sale right now---Just click on the red & blue "view my other items" box to see more---Thanks!~~~
