55pc FRENCH STERLING GILT FLATWARE SET AUCHINCLOSS PROVENANCE
Presented is a fabulous quality 55-piece set of French silver flatware made by Pierre Queille and Jean-Baptiste Landry during the 1830s-50s. The whole set is French 1st standard .950 silver purity, which is actually higher than sterling .925 silver purity. This was originally a larger set, which has been divided up over the years, we believe this would be best used as a dessert or fish set. The whole set is completely gilt. Each handle is ornately cast with detailed faces. All of the peices have an old, intertwining double S monogram. Several of the pieces have an additional tiny monogram on their handles. The blades of the knives are silver, so the weight of the set includes every piece, the knife handles have very minimal weighting and are practically hollow.
The most interesting part of this set is its provenance. This set belonged to Hugh D. Auchincloss III, Jaqualine Kennedy Onassiss step-brother. We have a note written by him talking about the fond memories he has of using the set during formal and informal gatherings at Hammersmith Farm of Newport, RI, the venue of Jackie and John Kennedys wedding reception. We have also included a letter from Gustave G.S. White Auctioneers authenticating the provenance of the set.
This set includes:
15 Knives: 7 5/8 inches long.
17 Forks: 7 3/8 inches long.
16 Dessert Spoons: 7 3/8 inches long.
6 Teaspoons: 5 7/8 inches long.
1 Gravy/Sauce Ladle: 8 3/8 inches long.
Each piece in this set is marked with the French 1st Standard Minerva head mark for .950 purity silver. Some of the pieces are marked PQ for Pierre Queille and the others are marked LB Landry for Jean-Baptiste Landry. The LB Landry pieces also have a retailers mark.
This set is in excellent overall condition and the designs are crisp. There is some slight wear to the gilding on the high points. One of the teaspoons has a dent to its bowl. There are no other dents, no breaks, no splits, no monogram removals and no repairs.
The combined weight of this set is 2630 grams or 92.8 ounces.
Good luck and bid with confidence.
