This is a delicate German Art Deco ceramic standing dancer from the 1920s with the Katzhutte mark on its base. It stands 14" tall and is 7” wide. Katzhutte ceramic figures, mostly female, were produced in Germany in competition with the famous Austrian Goldscheider ceramic work. Many of the figures are, in fact, copies, or copies with some variation, of Goldscheider figurals. Katshutte was sometimes called the “Poor Man’s Goldscheider”. Porzellanfabrik Hertwig & Co in Thuringer, Katzhutte, Germany, was founded by Christoph Hertwig and Benjamin Beyermann in 1864 and during the late 19teens, 20s, and 30s produced these wonderful ceramic figurals. This one is a Spanish dancer with a deep maroom figured dress, a large comb in her hair, and posed in the midst of a bold dance step. This is amongst the high-end Katzhutte figurals, rivalling similar Goldscheider pieces. It is mint: no chips, cracks, hairlines, glaze flakes, or repairs. This piece makes a wonderful addition to any collection of Eurpoean Art Deco ceramics. I have follwed in the tradition established by Hertwic & Company – my reserve is considerably lower than similar Goldscheider figurals. The high bidder pays postage and insurance. Payment can be made with a check (cashier’s or personal), a money order, or a credit card (via PayPal). Payment must be made within 10 days of the close of the auction. On Oct-07-08 at 06:38:56 PDT, seller added the following information:ALERT!!! I got this one entirely wrong!!! This is not a German Katzhutte figural. It is an Austrian KERAMOS figural made in Vienna and marked WIEN. It was designed and signed by Josef Lorenzl, one of the Goldscheider artists. The signature is hard to see and impossible to photograph but I found it on the base near the right foot. A viewer asked me for a close up of the mark and when I looked at it with a magnifying glass I realized that I mistook the Keramos mark for the similar Katzhutte mark. I am adding a close-up photograph of the mark. So if you collect Katzhutte ceramics and aren't interested in this Austrian piece you are protected -- the reserve has not yet been met so you can just stop bidding. I thought of cancelling this listing and relisting the piece with the correct description, but decided against that. I hope that this note is enough to correct my mistake. The Keramos mark was used in Austria by pottery manufacturers such as the Wiener Kunst Keramische Werkstatte during the high art deco period, 1920-1939. This piece dates from circa 1930.
