This auction is for (1) Hallicrafters "Glo-Bar" and (2) Philco "Tube Saver" thermistors. All used and tested.
These were installed in tube radios by manufacturers to limit the initial surge put on radio tubes upon start up. Thus they had names like "tube saver" and the like. Hallicrafters own was called "Glo-Bar". In effect they are thermistors that protect the filaments in the tubes upon start up. The result is a set that takes a few more seconds to warm up before singing as the tubes and any prevelant dial light are brought up slower rather than the usual few seconds. Brand new, they would start out around 900Ω and drop lower as the set warms up. These 3 start out around 1KΩ which is usually normal when you come across used ones. They are known to get pretty hot in a set and they drop in value as the set warms up but still retain the heat. This is normal operation. To my knowledge these are no longer made and can be a bit of a bear to come by even at trade shows.
These 3 are used, pulled from other sets. (1) Hallicrafters and (2) Philco. They have all been tested and are ready to go or store for future use. They start out around 1KΩ. Pretty easy way to test them, connect one to your meter and let it sit for a second or two, then as it warms the value will drop slowly. To speed this up for testing purposes, hold the component between your fingers or breath some warm air on them and you will see them drop as in normal operation but not as quickly. Please see photos for size comparison. A couple of the leads are pretty short but any electrical hobbyist can get around this with the right know-how.
