This is a true gendaito (handforged from tamahagane, water quenched, etc.), from the WWII era, in late 1944 style mounts (all pieces of which have matching serial numbers, which also matches the number marked on the nakago).  The furniture is solid and in good shape overall, with the exception of the tsuka which has very loose wrapping (but underneath is quite solid as well), and the non-functioning release mechanism. The saya is metal, but is wood on the inside (also marked with the serial #, "113"). But enough of the mounts. The blade is a very nice signed katana, and I'm having a little difficulty with the mei. It looks like "Bishu Mitsunobu", but Mitsunobu was a seki smith. Any help from anyone as always, is greatly appreciated. Seki Mitsunobu is a listed smith, designated as "Rikigun Jumei Tosho", a smith officially sanctioned by the imperial army to produce blades for its officers (and allocated a certain amount of tamahagane to do so). Nakago bears the "Jumei" stamp, the star, the only showa stamp indicating that the blade is indeed a true gendaito (some have even recieved shinsa from NBTHK). It looks like there is a seki stamp on the mune side of the nakago as well (Very tiny. Hard to see, much less photograph). The other side of the nakago reads something like "Showa (something or other) nen san gatsu hi".(a day in march in the year showa (x?). The nakago is also marked with black ink or lacquer. The one side reads san-roku-kyu-shi, 3694, corresponding to the arabic numerals also written on the nakago. The other shows ichi-ichi-san, 113, the serial number matching the blade to the furniture, all bearing the same number. Dimensions are as follows...Nagasa:26 and 1/8", Nakago 8 and 5/8", tsuka 10 and 1/2", Motohaba 1 and 1/4", sakihaba 7/8", motogasane 5/16", sakigasane 1/4". Kissaki is about 1 and 1/2" long, but unfortunately, has ware running along the kissaki and crossing the yokote on one side (This surface ware does not go clear through the blade though). Its unfortunate, because its a very nice blade, but not really that big of a deal. The hamon is very interesting. Some kind of gunome-midare. In some places, it looks very much like flames. In others, nice orderly gunome. Even kataochi-gunome. Very unique and interesting hamon. Hada is a tight itame. Some surface stains, but other that that and the ware, the blade is in excellent condition. It will be absolutely beautiful with a slight touch up polish.  100% guaranteed to be authentic and exactly as described. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. takayamablack at gmail. Free shipping (insurance included) within the continental U.S.  All others, please inquire. Thank you very much.
