Hohokam Prehistoric Donut Stone
The Hohokam were prehistoric Native Americans who lived and farmed around the Gila and Salt River, or Phoenix Basin area, and southern Arizona, between 600AD - 1400AD. During the 15Th century, the Hohokam culture disintegrated. This artifact comes from that culture, and is made of a hard, porous, gray basalt. In the books this piece is often called a digging stone or target stone but it's true use is not agreed upon by the experts. This one is very unique in workmanship and design and the only one like it we have seen. This artifact is from the Tucson Estate of Mr. Thomas Walker. Mr. Walker was a long time, well known, Tucson businessman who was also an avid collector of Pre-Columbian and Native American artifacts. This stone was glued together with Elmer's glue when we acquired it. We have re-glued it professionally with Paleo Bond and the break is now hardly noticeable. This is a wonderful ancient artifact that displays well, and as a collector, I personally like the old, used, items, as they are so genuine. Old stone pieces were usually utilized as tools, or weapons, and the lithics industry rarely takes this into account. I have seen many a collector turn up his nose at a broken or repaired artifact but I get suspicious if a piece looks too new or is unused. Dimensions: 3-1/4" in diameter, 1-1/2" thick. This artifact has been authenticated by Mr. Fred Gumbart, owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries (520-322-6388). He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations and official, licensed, and accredited appraising of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts. Fred is a lifelong collector of artifacts, and has the most astounding memory of anyone I have personally known.
