A beautiful and uniformly designed contemporary half leather edition. The material used is high-quality sheep skin. The bindings are richly decorated. Embellished with fine gilt-stamped lines, an ornamental gilt-stamped border as well as three decorative floral blind-stampings the spines of each volume look very elegant. Two light brown and gilt-stamped spine labels state short title, volume number and alphabetical range. The boards are bound in elegant red/brown paper.
The volumes are slightly rubbed and corners as well as edges are bumped. Smaller damages in ten of the 36 volumes have been professionally repaired. Two volumes lacking title page, one title repaired at margin and one title cut.
The series contains all 36 text volumes of the Geneva Quarto edition of the Encyclopédie.
On the whole this is a very well preserved edition of the extremely rare Geneva Quarto Edition of the Encyclopédie.
Price references:
There are only two other complete copies of the rare Geneva Quarto Edition for sale on the international antiquarian book market. One copy is being sold by Subun-So Book Store in Tokyo for 16,600 €. The other by Studio Antenore in Rome for 18,000 €. The latter contains 36 text volumes, 3 plate volumes and 6 volumes of analytical tables.
Description, content and further information:
The greatest minds of the 18th century worked on the Encyclopédie, among them Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire, Leibnitz, Turgot and Condillac. As one of the greatest undertakings in the history of book printing the Encyclopédie marked a significant change in the way knowledge was dealt with and ordered in the Western hemisphere. It was and in many ways still is one of the "seven pillars of our culture and education" (Panckoucke).
A beautiful feature of the Geneva Quarto Edition are the extraordinray engraved portraits of the Encyclopédie authors Diderot and D’Alembert. Both plates were made by the French master Charles-Nicholas Cochin (1715-1790). The portrait of Denis Diderot is in the first volume whereas the engraving of D’Alembert decorates the frontispiece of the second volume. Both plates are in wonderful condition.
All volumes at hand belong to the extremely rare Geneva Quarto Edition. On publication the Encyclopédie was forbidden in all of France. The publishers had to overcome a lot of difficulties in order to get printing permission. As they were prosecuted in Paris, they transported the printing press to Neufchatel where only few copies were finished.
The Encyclopédie quickly became the most important work of its kind, outgrowing even the popular Zedler. For decades it controlled and documented the intellectual progress in Europe and became a brainpool for the ideas of the Enlightenment. Unlike any other work it epitomises the pre-revolutionary zeitgeist in France. The 178 authors of the Encyclopédie aimed at changing the old power structures and furthering a democratic transformation of society. Especially for the rest of Europe it was a messenger of a new era, of technological advances and like no other promoted the personal freedom of the individual.
Today, the Encyclopédie is a very important historical source not only for its philosophical and political merit but for its extensive description of technology, craft and manufacture on the brink of industrialisation. These chapters inform in great depths about working techniques and social environments of the middle and lower classes of the time.
All volumes apart from 30, 33 and 36 (3rd edition) are in the second Nouvelle Edition. The titles of volumes 30 and 33 state both Geneva and Neufchatel as the printing location.
This auction is a very rare occasion for bibliophiles and collectors. It is very hard to find the Geneva Quarto Edition on the international book market, especially in such well preserved condition.

Die Reihe besteht aus sehr schönen, einheitlich gestalteten Halblederbänden der Zeit aus braunem Schafsleder. Die Einbände sind reich verziert. Die Buchrücken werden von goldgeprägten Linien, einer ebenfalls goldgeprägten ornamentalen Bordüre am unteren Kapital sowie drei floral gestalteten Blindprägungen geschmückt. Zwei hellbraune Rückenschilder je Band geben den Kurztitel, die Bandnummer sowie den alphabetischen Abschnitt des jeweiligen Bandes in dekorativer Goldprägung an. Die Deckel der Bände sind mit elegantem rotbraunen Buntpapier bezogen.
Die Bände sind etwas berieben und an den Ecken und Kanten der Deckel stärker bestoßen. Bei zehn der 36 Bände wurden kleinere Beschädigungen vor kurzem schonend restauriert. Das vorliegende Angebot umfasst alle 36 Textbände der Genfer Quart-Ausgabe der Encyclopédie.
Insgesamt ein überaus gut erhaltenes Exemplar der seltenen Quart-Ausgabe des wohl bedeutendsten Lexikons der europäischen Aufklärung.

Auf dem internationalen antiquarischen Buchmarkt finden sich derzeit nur zwei Angebote für eine vollständige Genfer Quart-Ausgabe
der Encyclopédie. Zum einen beim Subun-So Book Store in Tokio für umgerechnet 16.600 €, zum anderen beim Studio Antenore in Rom für 18.000 €. Das zweite Angebot enthält jedoch zusätzlich zu den 36 Text- und 3 Tafelbänden noch 6 Bände mit analytischen Tafeln.
Beschreibung, Inhalt und weitere Eckdaten:
An der Encyclopédie wirkten die größten Denker des 18. Jahrhunderts mit, unter anderem Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire, Leibnitz, Turgot und Condillac. Als eines der größten enzyklopädischen Projekte in der Geschichte des Buchdrucks, markierte die Encyclopédie einen wichtigen Wechsel im Umgang mit Wissen in der westlichen Welt. Der Verleger Panckoucke beschrieb die Encyclopédie sogar als eine der "sieben Säulen unserer Kultur- und Bildungsgeschichte".
Ein besonderes Merkmal der Genfer Quart-Ausgabe sind die sehr schönen Porträttafeln der Encyclopédie Autoren Diderot und D’Alembert. Beide Kupfer wurden von dem französischen Meister Charles-Nicholas Cochin (1715-1790) gefertigt. Das Porträt von Denis Diderot findet sich im ersten Band, der Stich von D’Alembert ziert das Frontispiz des zweiten Bandes. Beide Kupfer sind in wunderbarem Zustand.
Alle Bände der vorliegenden Edition gehören zu der extrem seltenen Genfer Quart-Ausgabe. Zur Zeit der Erstausgabe war das Werk in ganz Frankreich verboten, weshalb die Herausgeber zahlreiche Schwierigkeiten überwinden mussten, um es drucken zu können. Da sie in Paris verfolgt wurden, brachten sie die Druckerpresse in großer Eile von dort nach Neufchatel, wo nur wenige Editionen fertig gestellt werden konnten.
Die Encyclopédie wurde schnell zu einem der bedeutendsten Werke seiner Zeit und verkaufte sich noch besser als der berühmte Zedler. Jahrzehntelang dokumentierte und kontrollierte das Werk den intellektuellen Fortschritt Europas und wurde zu einem Sammelbecken der philosophischen Ideen der Aufklärung. "In Frankreich war die Encyclopédie charakteristisch für die vorrevolutionäre Zeit. Sie diente dazu, den gesellschaftlichen Progress zu befördern, der auf Veränderung der veralteten Herrschaftsstrukturen zielt. Die Bedeutung der Encyclopédie liegt heute vor allem in der umfassenden Darstellung von Technik, Handwerk und Manufaktur an der Schwelle des Industriezeitalters. Diese Artikel dienen als wichtige historische Quelle der Arbeitstechniken und vor allem auch des sozialen Umfelds der Mittel- und Arbeiterklasse des 18. Jahrhunderts.
Bis auf die Bände 30, 33 und 36, welche in der dritten Auflage vorliegen, gehören alle Bände der zweiten Auflage an. Bei den Bänden 30 und 33 fällt zudem die Besonderheit der parallelen Erscheinung in Genf und Neufchatel auf.
Dem Sammler und Liebhaber alter Bücher bietet sich hier eine wahrhaft einmalige Gelegenheit. Es ist heute sehr schwierig eine Genfer Quart-Ausgabe auf dem internationalen antiquarischen Buchmarkt zu erwerben, insbesondere in einem so guten Zustand wie die vorliegende Ausgabe.
